The term African Lion, Panthera leo, refers to several sub-species of this majestic cat found in East Africa, outer reaches of the southern Sahara Desert, a few countries in West Africa and most all countries in Southern Africa. Hunting pressure, loss of habitat and disease have squeezed the territory these cats once occupied which is reflected in their numbers, some 21,000 today. They are classified as vulnerable, meaning their population is decreasing, roughly halving since 1950, by the IUCN Red List. The West African Lion is of particular concern. Our Lion images have been harvested from Kruger National Park, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the old Kalahari Gemsbok Park, Etosha, the Skeleton Coast, Chobe, Moremi, The Central Kalahari, Hwange National Park, South Luangwa National Park, The Serengeti, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Molumi National Park, Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha National Park and Ndutu in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Samburu National Park, Amboseli National Par, Maasai Mara These parks are located in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya.
